Leeds Arena

I was intrigued by the Leeds Arena commission from Populous Architects because of the facade. Their computer renderings emphasized the LED light strips and I was curious to learn more about the arena. The innovative aspect of this project is the fan shaped bowl because the tight spatial configuration allows for a good angle and sight line to the stage from any seat in the arena.

The facade is very flexible in terms of colors and patterns for different events and suits the purpose well. The way the skin is detailed must have been previously arranged using computers to ensure it could assemble correctly and to try different patterns to see which one would fit best. The concept of the Leeds Arena was a kaleidoscope and how the exterior of the building could express different things depending on the event. The lighted facade makes it dynamic and an exciting place to go to. The arena is also extremely efficient because of its acoustics and the layout is convenient and safe for the users.
